In 2002, Sean Paul Ryan Francis Henriques – globally known as Sean Paul – released his second album, the Grammy Award winning Dutty Rock, and catapulted himself into worldwide fame. Paul’s blend of classic, Kingston, Jamaica-influenced reggae with accessible, top-40 radio ready hooks ensured his singles would remain in heavy rotation for years to come. Successive albums followed and his stable of easily identifiable tracks meant that everyone from teenagers to grandmothers around the world would recognize his music in perpetuity. What does this, some of you may be wondering, have to do with Madhvi and Keith’s engagement and wedding? Let us spring forward to the autumn of 2013, when both Madhvi and Keith were graduate students at one of the world’s elite universities, King’s College London. On a random afternoon, Keith’s roommate, Michelle, and their friend (and in Michelle’s case, course mate) Brie, knocked on Keith’s door and asked if he wanted to get a ticket for an upcoming Sean Paul appearance at London’s renowned nightclub, Ministry of Sound. Keith, who was operating under a “say yes to everything” policy owing to the move to London, agreed, despite not being a fan and knowing full well that if that question came mere months prior when he was in Massachusetts, it would have been laughed off and shot down. Michelle and Brie casually noted that their fellow course mate, Maddie, would be joining. Keith acknowledged this bit of information and went back to his headphones. Cut to the night of Sean Paul’s ballyhooed Ministry of Sound appearance, and Keith is deeply uncomfortable. The room is packed to the gills with 18-and-19-year-old children and the potpourri of sweat and Axe Body Spray invaded and offended his sense of smell. Keith, not really cutting the figure of the classically defined version of a “party animal” was in a two-sizes-too-big cable-knit sweater. He was toasty. Madhvi, quiet for most of the night, was doing her utmost to keep up with Brie and Michelle, who each seemed to be hitting their stride despite how late the night was getting. Mr. Paul, likely as the result of his celebrity, was taking his sweet time getting on stage and the 2 AM hour neared. He finally appeared and played a 30-minute medley of his biggest hits before departing. Cheers for that, Mr. Paul, well done. Keith, Madhvi, and their friends eventually called it. On the way out, Keith continued to look back at the much smaller Madhvi as they snaked their way through the throngs of kids enjoying their first few weeks of life without mum and dad to ensure she made it to the exit. The night ended with little fanfare. Madhvi and Keith survived and went on their separate ways, awaiting news of the latest party. Over that year, they would see each other occasionally. In the spring of 2014, they were even on a group trip together to Rome, where Madhvi tried wine for what must have been the first time… It wasn’t until June, though, when both were unattached, that sparks finally started to fly. A trip to Barrrrthelona (Barcelona) and a smooch at a nightclub got the ball rolling and most of the summer of 2014 was spent together while they polished off their Masters’ dissertations, ate too many brownies, and savored all London had to offer. When THE MAN (the British government) reminded Keith that his visa was expiring, he returned to Massachusetts. Though they had only just started on a journey together, both Madhvi and Keith agreed that it would be worth it to stick together and find a way to live in the same place once again. This was their first foray with long-distance but, of course, it would not be the last. Eventually, Keith was accepted back into graduate school and Madhvi found them a wonderful apartment in Keith’s preferred postal code (SE1). In the autumn of 2015, the duo moved in together for the first time and lived and loved in the wonderful London area of Bermondsey. There, they regularly conquered the Bermondsey Beer Mile, had a regular appointment at local pubs for Sunday Roasts, and hosted the premier social event of the year: their annual Thanksgiving Party (reminder: Thanksgiving is an American holiday; they just wanted to ply their friends with food and football). They also welcomed their best buddy, George, into the fold. George, the sweetest, friendliest, laziest Jack-Chi (Jack Russell/Chihuahua) you’re ever going to meet, and he helped Madhvi and Keith become more than just a couple. They became a family. Madhvi and Keith are fortunate to have friends all over the world and they’ve always done their utmost to see them wherever they are. This has led to travels to Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Luxembourg, Austria, Scotland, Los Angeles, Spain, Ireland, and more. Madhvi has also now seen every state of Keith’s beloved New England and during Christmas 2018, she was personally introduced to the Sonia family’s capacity for long, long road-trips when she joined Keith and his mom on a drive from Florida to Vermont, where Keith’s sister Kacey and her family live. Poor Madhvi. By the autumn of 2019, THE MAN was at it again and Keith was compelled to return to the U.S. The duo had it all figured out: they’d go back and forth every so often before Madhvi would settle in the U.S. in 2020. Easy peasy. Well, that was until COVID-19 upended everything. Instead of prepping for this very wedding, they were once again forced to endure a long-distance relationship. What they couldn’t predict, though, was just how long it would be until they would see each other. From January 2020 until September 2021, they were separated by the mighty Atlantic and an extraordinary degree of uncertainty. And yet, because they do love each other, they somehow persevered and were eventually reunited. The couple requests that their official position on the tragic COVID-19 pandemic be known: they did not care for it! As they gear up for what has been a near-decade long love affair full of laughs, cries, a lot of Delirium, trips, walks with George, an appearance on BBC’s Pointless, running a ten mile marathon, career highs and lows, the arrival of their nieces Nora and Zoe, and getting through 2020, they’ve finally made it and they’re so thrilled that you can join them to be a part of what ought to be 2024’s party of the year. They’re so in love with each other and they’re so grateful for all of you. Here’s to love, friendship, and a bright future ahead.
